I went out to my usually haunt to try and retake an abstract shot of a bird with significant motion blur for the Take 2 challenge (I got what I wanted which is in voting and not doing well – as expected, but not getting many comments – which is unexpected). I had in the back of my mind the High & Low Key challenges as well as the Sepia challenge so I was for ever quickly changing settings for exposure, shutter speed, iso, etc. This was my third (and last) day at this water whole site trying to get the Take 2 shot. Within 15 minutes of finally getting the abstract I wanted I got a shot for Low Key that I’m very happy with and this shot that I felt would look good in sepia with a pure white bird against a very blue sky. Normally, I probably would have gone for a pure B&W but the challenge is sepia and I feel this still works well. Oh, on the first day out shooting I got a shot I really, really liked that looked good in sepia but I’ve tweaked some extra colours in it and have decided to enter it in the June FS instead.

There are quite a few derelict houses and a wreaked tram that I should probably have taken instead of this as well as my elderly stepfather-in-law that may have been more suitable subjects. But I like the composition and contrast effects of this shot and I like the idea of having several challenge entries in at the one time from the one photo shoot.

This is my interpretation of sepia using grey scale and tri-tones. I have absolutely (great to be able to spell that word correctly after another recent challenge) no expectations about this shot and so will not be disappointed with a finish in the four’s. I also don’t expect to get many comments for a shot that probably won’t hold the attention of the viewers. But I like the shot and feel it is worthy enough for entering.

That bird actually looks happy! Nice framing and clarity.
