Originally intended for the motion challenge. I lined up the sun behind the statue, and in flew the bird. I really wanted to know how this would have done as a portrayal of motion, as opposed to the iceskating crowd I settled on.

Critique club... slightly delayed

I see an angel statue in silhouette, a bird in silhouette, some trees in the background, some buildings in the distance, and a blue sky.

Silhouettes can be very powerful images if done correctly. What could have been done to improve this image:
1. try to find an angle that eliminates some of the distracting background elements... or at least if they can't be eliminated try to minimalize them.. make sure they're not interfering with the statue.
2. I would have tried a more dramatic angle. Maybe from a lower angle, or from a really high angle. Try not to take all your images at human level. Pretend you're a bug. Pretend you're a bird. What would they see?

Try this one time. I see you've centered the sun behind the statue to create the silhouette. Great idea! Now try having the sun peak over an edge somewhere... So you see part of it. if it's done right you'll end up with a pretty silhouette AND a star shape where the sun is visible!

Sky being bluer would help this as it is fairly colorless lie it is. The angle the pic was taken at could've moved a little to hide a little more of the sun. The buildings in the background are a little distracting to me. - Inspzil

Neat the way you caught the bird in this!

I love the silhouettes here, of the angel statue against the delicate, beautiful bare trees and the bird. The positioning of the sun behind the statue is great. But something about the composition spoils it a little. I think all it needs is a slightly tighter crop, and it would be wonderful.

The dark tones also seem slightly grey to me. Some levels adjustment would give it just that extra bit of depth and contrast to increase the impact of the silhouettes. Nice work otherwise.

Great capture of the moment. My feeling is that a crop to make this a portrait shot instead of landscape would have helped keep the eye over on the left where the action is. As it is now, I am drawn to the trees instead of the bird.

Neat picture, the pidgeon is a nice touch. The sun behind the statue is another nice touch. I don't care for the buildings all that much, but overall, it's pretty nice. 7 Swash

I am wondering what prevented you from cropping to just the left side... Otherwise, a wonderful capture.

Interesting use of the sun to create a silhouette, and the bird (pigeon?) in flight is a nice catch. However, due to the silhouetting and the angle, the wings on the statue dont make it immediately clear what it is - a few paces to the right would mean that the left wing didnt go throught the statue's head, and it would still be silhouetted against the sun. The focus on the background feels a bit off - I'd prefer it if the DoF was either a bit deeper with everything in focus, or a bit shallower, with the background trees more out of focus.

Nice silouet image, I think it would've worked even better have you taken this shot from a lower angel.

Did you realize the bird was there when you took this? It adds so much to an already beautiful photo. Well done.

An interesting shot, especially since you were able to capture the bird in flight - I think it adds to the appeal of the shot. I like the look of the angel against the gray sky and the stark, bare trees. It definitely has a sort of "other-worldly" feel to it. Composition works well for me. I think my favorite thing about it is that everything is backlit, and in silhouette. 8. lhall

nice composition, i would like it better if there were more color saturation and maybe some more clarity.

Seems a bit out of focus overall. Neither the trees, nor the angle are clearly in focus. A higher crop, with less, or even none of the building showing would have looked a bit better in my opinion.

I like this, but I'm never crazy for shots of statues. Still here I can only see the silhouette. Also the trees have sucked me into this shot. I love the feel here and really think you did a good job. Justine

Nice framing - great catch with the bird flying by. I wish there were a bit more lighting on the statue - or perhaps just taken from a different angle to catch more of the details. Perhaps shot from directly in front or on the side? That might have introduced unwanted features in the background for you though. Overall I like the idea but the shot is just a bit too dark for my taste. = 6

Nice how the bird and statue are caught in the frame, but the light isn't nice I think.

I would have liked to see about a third of the right side cropped out. Otherwise, very nice photo.

I like how you got the angels wings, and the bird in the shot. what wonderful timing. the statue is interesting looking. I wish we could get a bit more detail, but probably difficult to get detail and the nice effect from the sun. the angle and framig/cropping are ok. maybe just a bit much room to the right. it looks like she is facing to the left, which automatically tells my brain that I wish there were more space to the left of the photo, than to the right. otherwise a nice shot. good luck in the challenge.
