Thanks to everybody for the constructive comments!!! This is the first challenge that i've entered that i actually set up the shot and thought about it before hand, and i have to admit it was a lot of fun... even if this was a bit rushed. Some of my friends also had suggested that the cone be more colorful, or a different flavor, but i wanted the eye to be drawn immediately to the model's face, and follow her eyes down to the falling cone.... which in reality could have been caught with a higher shutter speed. The peeps from the gelato store were already ticked that i bought a cone just to drop on the ground so i didn't want to risk a reshoot! :-D

Anyway, the idea came because i think, as jmritz noted, the saddest thing i can think of is a brand new ice cream cone falling on the ground. Unless you're eddie murphy, obviously!

This would be a interesting action shot - but the ice cream & the cone gets lost on the concrete walkway - on my screen it is too washed out. Some brightness/contrast and some dodge & burning would improve the visibility of the ice cream. As far for sadness - the idea is out of the box and an interesting take but it needed more impact to reach the viewers with a strong connection to the emotion. First off the model has the facial reaction of an 'oh no' - it is anticipation of a bad outcome but the reaction has not yet turned to sadness. I think the idea of sadness over a dropped cone would be much more stronger if the model was a child - to an adult a dropped cone is just a temporary annoyance to a child it *can* color their mood for hour and depending on the child maybe even the whole day. Also I think the idea would have been better if you brought your audience closer to the action and reaction. By that I mean a close up shot showing a frowning/unhappy face with the cone in the hand but the scoop of ice cream on the floor. As it is here there is too much space surrounding the main subject and the backdrop is also a tad busy - a less busy backdrop (a wall with simple cement walkway for example - the sunlight shining through and on the leaves creates to much variation in light and shadow) would have let your main subject and the ice cream pop more visually. Nice idea. Your crop is a bit odd.

Possibly the sadist photo in the challenge. That moment caught, perfectly, the cone in mid air. The sense of loss at that moment overwhelms my emotions.

Almost lose the cone in the light. If it were more prominent I think this would stand out. But I get it. Good luck.

Took me a minute to recognize the ice cream cone. I like the framing and focus. For this shot, though, I wish the cone was in focus -- or at least a more obvious focal point. Though now that I have said that and looked at the picture again, I really like that both the line on the road and the model's eyes intersect at the cone. The line on the road camouflage the cone too much. Maybe if it had a bright red cherry on top -- or was a brighter colored flavor it would pop out more. Meanwhile, I don't think this shot portrays much sadness. Maybe it would feel more sad to me in a minute or two when the model examines the damage or puts it in the trash.

Not sure what's going on here.... oh that blur is ice cream. She dropped it... oh I see. Higher shutter speed would have made it the ice cream focused and apart of the story. But mabey your were going for motion. But like I said when I first looked at it I thought the cone was in the distance and not apart of the subject. This is the longest comment I have ever left. Wow.
