I don't mind spending everyday
Out on your corner in the pouring rain
Look for the girl with the broken smile
Ask her if she wants to stay awhile

--lyrics from She Will Be Loved by Maroon 5

First off I want to mention the texture on the walls.
Yes I am crazy. I went to town on the back wall inside the garage - smeared and splattered a la Jackson Pollock style. Hopefully it will wash off as the paint is washable finger paint.

So, for two long years I have been waiting for a Sadness challenge to fit this idea. In a Side Challenge for Overlays back in Dec. 2010 I decided to just do it

Now the challenge rolls over....so I just Reshoot it learning from some challenges the first time out. Had to reshoot the picture of my daughter smiling as well for the reflection in the mirror. I figured I'd borrow the same trick Aimeethetoo used for her Red Ribbon in Brothers Grimm challenge. I learned from experience trying to get the smile reflected in the mirror is very challenging and my model (my daughter) is not long on patience. Printed the picture and cut it out to fit in the frame of the mirror.

My thanks to my daughter for posing for the shots, especially the smile since she thinks she does not have a nice one (nonsense, in my opinion for she has a beautiful smile)

The cracks? - Two sharpie pens, a silver and black, were used on a clear plastic cover. Then I cut it to the shape of the mirror and placed it on top.

I laid out the black and white tiles out in the checkerboard pattern...and I got some of the paint splatter got on the tiles too. Not all the tiles are the same exact color white tiles so thank goodness for B&W conversion.

I'm just floored...gobsmacked. With a score swinging between 6.15 to 6.20 on the final day I thought I would be somewhere between 8th place to 20th place (I gauged that by looking at the results in the Cool Colors II, Urban Nature and Street Photography IV Challenges) But a ribbon! Very, very unexpected. Thank you all for your votes and compliments.

Also I want to thank Bear_Music, Yo_Spiff, Ja-9, Fiora and gcoulson for the helpful feedback.

Way to go on the ribbon. When I looked at your entry in comparison to the other entries, I really felt that it deserved a ribbon, and was saddened to hear your score in the scoring thread. Looks like it all worked out anyways though ;-)

Creative. This may just be some wishful thinking... but I wonder... if this would have worked better a pinch off-center?

Nice set up but I'm more drawn to the pp'ing than I am to the image.

Having a hard time with the smile in the mirror. I get it but seeing the smile dampens the sadness. Nice photo, love the backdrop. Good luck.
