I was experimenting for the Weston challenge with this shot. After I realized he did not use shallow DOF, so this shot wouldn't work and I went a completely different route.

I like the shot anyway, and can you believe it is just a little burned-up sage brush! It's only about 1 foot high. I placed my camera at the base of it and shot some pictures without looking through the view finder. It was fun to see what I got when I was home.

This is beautiful! I caught myself getting sucked into it for a few minutes.

The shallow dof gives me the sense that this tree is miles high...very cool!

This is beautiful! Looks like it could have been taken with an old Kodak Pocket camera (the ones you opened out and had bellows). I don't know why it was a "pocket" camera. You would have had to have a big pocket to carry it in. They took amazing images though.

jbsmithana, I completely agree with you, as you can see in my notes the reason I didn't use this for the Weston challenge was because of the DOF. I understand your feelings about posting outtakes before the challenge is over, but I assure you this is nothing like my entry so I felt it would be fine.

I love the DOF with that blurry soft background. With some of the grasses in and out of focus, it has a sense of movement in an otherwise steadfast image. Love the textures of the tree. You wouldn't have noticed them as well had it stayed in color. I think BW is totally under appreciated.

I like this perspective but it would not likely have done well in the Weston challenge as it does not have a deep DOF.

You might want to know that they do not smile on posting outtakes before voting is complete. : )

That's very pleasing to the eye.
