Challenge: Birds In Flight (Basic Editing)
Camera: Canon EOS-7D
Lens: Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 AF APO DG OS HSM for Canon
Location: Hickory, North Carolina
Date: Mar 17, 2011
Aperture: f/6.3
ISO: 400
Shutter: 1/1000
Galleries: Nature, Birds
Date Uploaded: Mar 17, 2011

I hadn't really intended to enter a challenge, but I recently purchased the Sigma 150-500mm lens and have been out playing with it some this week. I decided to try to capture a bird in flight just to work out the lens a little. In reality, birds in flight is a challenge for any camera and lens combination. In order to fill a frame with any bird, even a large one, you still have to be rather close. This particular image is about a 6-megapixel crop out of an 18-megapixel image from the Canon 7D.

At any rate, I do enjoy photographing birds, and this is one of the many reasons I decided to buy the new Sigma telephoto lens. So far, it's performed exceptionally well.

Good luck to everyone in this challenge :)

Good to see ya back, John. I hadn't realized you'd entered this challenge. "Jim Setzler, wildlife photographer"... Who'da thunk it? :-) This is a nice capture.

I just got a used 100-400mm Canon myself. It's hard work using those beasts! I'm just sort of starting to get the hang of it now, and now the birds are returning to the Cape, so I have my fingers crossed.

This should have done much better! So sharp and the bird's pose makes it

The feet on this are a hoot! They look so awkward coming down. Great capture. (just looking, not voting)

Decent shot. But I've seen enough ducks landing in my life.

I don't recall ever seeing a photo so clearly showing a duck lowering and fanning out its tail and adding its feet to prep for landing on water, though I recognize it and have seen it many times. Head position also lends some nice personality. I feel I can relate to this duck.

Great image! The bird looks like he/she is jumping. Sorry I don't know how to tell if it is a he or she in birds.
