Visiting my parents in Florida. Wonderful sky so had to swing by the beach.

Plan was to get the beach, sea and sky in thirds, but then this surfer showed up and waltzed into the scene. I ran down the beach and botched the aperture and REALLY botched the shutter speed. 1/13s, hand held, partly running from the wave (no tripod). Sure wish I could do it over, but I am super happy with what I did get.

Only got a few of him before he jumped in and this, despite its flaws, is a photo I really like.

Thank you very, very much for the comments.

Really beautiful image Scott. I don't know what flaws you are refering to. But yes, we all tend to see our images from a hypercritical point of view. Perfect time of exposure to create the water movement and to freeze the surfer. Well done.

Great effect. Love the whole composition of this shot.

Congratulations on top 10 Scott! This doesn't look like a mistake to me - the slow shutter gave some great movement to the water and I love that pier included in the shot - wouldn't be the same without it and the surfer is a great bonus.

I'm actually quite (pleasantly) surprised to see your shot hit Top10, as such not everything on DPC HAS to be pin sharp, as I have come to believe here! It's a good sign imo. (ETA) So it's not the lens, just slow s/s. That Siggy gets a lot of good reviews and I have seen other images where it's at it's sharpest at f/8 or so. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Well done.

Not flaws at all - in fact, your "botched" parts make this shot work! Congrats on an excellent picture!

This is just brilliant and should finish well. The movement of the water is just a great finish to a very well composed image!

I feel like I'm being dragged out there against my will, and wonder why, since the pier and the surfer seem perfectly capable of resisting the wave's forces...

Would be a stunning shot, if only there wasn't some camera shake. I don't mind the blur of the waves but the pier and surfer are visibly blurred/OOF. Could very well be the worst / softest part of your lens.
