Normally everybody sees glorious clear pictures of this area. When I was there, we postponed visiting the sound for 3 days due to rain, and then had to just go for it on the final day since we were heading up to the north side of the island and couldn't reschedule our tramping trip. The rainy weather brought out a completely different character to the area, and it was gorgeous. Driving there was awesome, waterfalls across the road everywhere, and all the cliffs were literally covered with falls. Quite the scene.
