The Great Horned Owl nest, the momma owl and the owlet. Bubo virginianus.

These are owls in the wild. They are free to fly away. Not to be confused with owls in captivity. There are a lot of closeup photos of rehabilitation owls, which are always framed and cropped to conceal the tether and/or confinement. Wild owls in this image.

I have a lot of photos of adult owls. And, I have several photos of owlets. But, I only have two images of the parent and fledgling in the nest at the same time. They are nocturnal birds. It is the rareness of this image which caused me to select it for the Best of 2010 challenge.

That's sooo cool! Maybe it could be a tad sharper and brighter but the subjects are fantastic. Is this in the wilderness or some bird sanctuary?
