 Isaac has actually had this almost since he was born, and it still works!

-Handheld, manual mode
-Flash fired at 2/3 power
-FL = 72.6 (35mm EQ)
-Cloned-in a bit of color into blurry blown-out area in foreground
-Cloned-out a couple minor dust/scratches
-RGB Curve
-Blue/Yellow Curve
-RGB Curve through gradient mask to even-out lighting
-Resize
-USM at 16%/64 dia/TH = 0
-USM at 88%/0.8 dia/TH = 5
-Enlarge Canvas to create border
-SaveAs JPEG at quality 9/10 = 252KB

I'm sorry, but I see three main problems in this photograph:

1) in general, and above all, I would have liked to see his/her face while playing. What I see now it's only a toy (and not a particularly significant one)and two hands;
2) the part not in focus (i.e. his/her hair and the upper part of the skirt) aren't good to see;
3) the light is too hard.

IMHO, obviously.

i'm guessing by the age of the kid you had to talk them into this? the flash is very close to the subject and creating harsh light, especially on the neck
