These two are ugly but they show a new to me trick.
Make, on separate layers, horizontal bands (being sure to select edge to edge) all the way down your masterpiece. Then select each layer and polarize each edge separately. They diminish in size perfectly and you can play with colors, rotation and orientation.
These two practice pieces are just to show the possibilities without the distraction of a pronounced pattern.
Other nuts n bolts: Add white canvas to make original square. At the end, make original editable by double clicking on original. That way you can select what, if any, of the original you want left in the composition.
(This last may be baby-talk, but I had to learn it, so maybe someone else needs to.)
