Challenge: From the Ground Up VI (Advanced Editing VII)
Camera: Canon EOS-5D
Lens: Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM

Probably the most serendipitous photo I've ever taken - a test exposure trying to get the tailpipe of the old truck and the sky in focus while keeping the histogram usable. The camera was lying on the ground, about 8 " from the tailpipe, but I had to handhold the angle to include the rusted truck bed, so I was shooting blind. The aperture should have been smaller to get the contrail in focus but, after several tries with a smaller f/stop, I wasn't able to duplicate the 'flare' on the 'horizon', so I went with this OOF frame. The black object on the horizon is the tie-down hook on the truck bed.

Thanks, Don, for the ribbon, it means a lot... and thanks to all for the comments.

Love the incredible depth and energy achieved here, notwithstanding the grounded mystery that drives so much of your work. What bothers me is the little offset extension of the flare trail in the upper left of the image. My sense is that the composition could be even more dynamic with the horizon shifted by corresponding length upward, keeping the eye within the image, instead of beckoning outward...

I thought for sure this one would ribbon. Guess it was too abstract for some people's taste. Got an 8 from me, however.

Wow, just lovely. interesting textures and angles, a bit out of the box so it may not score as well as it should, but it works for me.

This is a striking photo and an excellent use of the challenge technique. It gets my personal blue.

The idea is great and the delivery of that idea is well done, from the framing to the exposure/processing.

So very good and odd. A great combination for me. Love the dramatic lighting and crusty, rusty detail in the foreground, and the smooth but scratched plane that separates the pipe for the dreamy sky. The intriguing squiggle provokes all sorts of guesses.
