This tree sits on a hill to the side of interstate 30 just outside downtown Fort Worth.

The story is that an elderly woman who had been homeless at one time herself decided the homeless needed a Christmas tree. She chose this sad looking mimosa to decorate, and every holiday season it would "bloom". She was unable to make the climb up the hill after a few years, and others continued the tradition she started. She passed away in 2006 and there is now a bench next to the tree in her remembrance.

Anticipated critiques:
-Some visible haloing in the sky near the tree is sure to take a hit or two.
-Expect some comparison to my wife's shot of the same tree, which I feel may be a better composition.
-Someone will likely mention the freeway to the left as a distracting element. I chose to leave it in, as I feel it sets some context for the scene and helps tell the story that is here.

I really screwed up on the sky.

This was a mistake.

Post-challenge notes:
One of those shots that I somehow convinced myself was better than it really is. It deserved the mediocre average that it got. File this under "What was I thinking?"

Love that she thinks MINE is better. Mostly had a good time finding the tree off the freeway. The hill that this poor tree sits on is pretty steep so didn't have such a fun time climbing up to it but it was fun to find.

I like the sign, but cowtownwoman's is so much the better photo. So there.

I liked it - I really like the cityscape in the distance. Makes this quirky and unusual. But yes, there is some serious haloing around the tree, center, and some probably did not see your horizon as a main element to the photograph. Not a mistake to enter, though, as you shared a really cool story with it!

The composition pulls the eye away from the horizon and draws attention to the sign. A few steps back and to the right might have improved the shot. 7 for focus, DOF and color.

Certainly different and colorful. I hope you will post a bit of a background to this image in the photographers comments. I look forward to reading them.

Interesting photo, well captured and presented but hard to imagine the horizon is the dominant element in the photo.

Strange and incongruous. Love the colors, the sense of isolation from the mainstream, which can be seen in the distance. But that ghosting...
