 I bet you're all thinking... how the hell did he get close enough to a grouse to get that photo with an LX3 and it's limited zoom!?

Well?
The answer is, I didn't.
I just was putting this up out of curiosity. I took the shot for this purpose at the Denver Museum. The birds are stuffed, it's just an immaculate diorama. ;) Although, to be fair, if you've ever seen these guys in the wild, a lot of times you can walk right up to them and nearly touch them, as they don't tend to realize they've been seen and will sit still as a statue as you approach.
Hopefully there won't be a repeat of tihs...

I didn't even spot the bird in the thumb - oh, make that birds, I only just saw the second one! I'm not surprised that these birds seem confident in their habitat. I'm sure they often go unnoticed. That is a brilliant diorama, and nothing gives it away. The birds look alive and the setting so natural.
