The Midpoint Cafe in Adrian Texas is located exactly at the middle of historic route 66, 1139 miles distant to both Los Angeles and Chicago. My wife Cowtownmom and I drove this way on the return trip from a vacation to New Mexico. We missed the exit for Adrain because of an error on the AAA guide to rout 66. I was fine with pressing on to Amarillo, But Ellen REALLY wanted to have a piece of pie at the Midpoint Cafe, so we turned around. Unfortunately, the cafe is only open for breakfast and lunch, but we were rewarded with this wonderful sunset scene instead. This truck appears to be a guestbook of sorts, and has been covered with autographs by visitors to the cafe.

I did a lot of hand held HDR shots on this trip, and this one was one of the most successful efforts. I was surprised at how many of my bracketed sets aligned nicely for the merge.

I had initially posted this is the monthly side challenge, but removed it when I quickly realized it had potential to be my freestudy entry.

I think this is one of the more technically perfect challenge entries I have ever done, and I expect any critiques will fall in the category I consider to be personal preference, rather than serious flaws.

Anticipated critiques:
-Some may not like the way I framed the scene with the carport, and will think I should have cropped in closer.
-Telephone poles in background. (I cloned out some minor signs, posts and a modern lightpole, but I felt the telephone poles gave some context to this rural scene.)

Post-challenge notes:
My best scoring FS to date! Can't have any complaints about that!

Nice one! Yes, you should have cropped in closer. Still beautiful anyway.

How come I never pass places like these?

A small irony in the photo on the right are the blue signs indicating how to get to the interstate highway, which is what killed route 66 as a through travel road.

Contratulations, Steve, fantastic shot and great result. You did the right thing removing it from the SC (I should learn from that, my fs entry got hammered :).
I thought this was your truck :).

I just have the following to say:

I don't like the way you framed the scene with the carport, and think you should have cropped in closer.
-Telephone poles in background. (you cloned out some minor signs, posts and a modern lightpole, but you probably felt the telephone poles gave some context to this rural scene.)

Just joking, I like the photo very much.

The colours made me think of those car advertisements in the National Geographic from the 1960's.

My first thought was of Cormac McCarthy. It’s spare yet rich and visceral like McCarthy’s prose, though I suppose his colors would be more bleak. A very fine photograph. Thank you.

Nice use of framing elements. Interesting subject. Feels a bit overprocessed, especially the background.
