I've done several like this at night and had been meaning to do some day versions. With Autumn colors starting to line the roads, and the sun in a favorable position, I figured this challenge was a good reason to try.
Self portrait of me driving at 45mph+, with 5DII and 17-40L tripod mounted just off center (toward the passenger seat) and remote triggered. I had the camera tethered to my macbook so I could monitor exposure, image quality, etc on the fly.
I took somewhere between 75 and 125 images on a variety of roads. My primary objectives where sun (flare) through the sunroof -- which is tinted so acts as a natural grad filter along with some color in the trees and the sensation of speed. And since exposure times varied from 1/80 to over 2 seconds, keeping me sharp was also critical. I wanted the final image to have a dreamy feel, which was partly accomplished in post (but planned for ahead of time).
Some of you will also notice the car is an automatic, so I'm not really shifting. The majority were shot with both hands on the wheeel, then I started mixing it up a bit to add to the sense of accelerating down the road. So I faked shifting. :) |

My initial thought was "Seen it before" - but this has a great feel of a late autumnal day - I love driving when the weather is like this - the little hints of flare at the top are perfect,
