Ft Denaud. 18-70, hand held, polarizer.
This is a "Florida Cracker" house, typical of what the pioneers in this area built to live in if they were going to be in one place for a while. The style of architecture is being copied in some of the homes of today. Around this area, where it rained a lot, the siding boards were put on vertical, so that the rain would run off the boards and they would not stay damp and rot. This is a single story house. The porch, and the extra high roof and ceiling helped a lot with keeping the house from being too hot to stay in.

What a cool shot!

Thanks also for the notes. This is something we absolutely don't have in our neck of the woods. It's like reading abut a foreign country.... 8)

Bet being raised up off the ground helped keep it from rotting sooner, too. Great story; learned a little more history today :-)

I knew this was either Florida or Louisiana. Drove through swamps taking the gulf route to get from Austin, through Houston, and then New Orleans, on our way to Daytona one summer. That moss was surely creepy at night but since the a/c went out, it was the only way we could stand to drive, as I had a black vinyl top and seats. I can picture a guy with a harmonica and old coon hound on the front porch lazing in the heat. Nice story this weaves for me.
