I had to shoot a smoke assignment for class. I made an impromptu tub out of a steel frame and some plastic sheeting, put about an inch or two of water in it and added some dry ice. This was a hollow, plastic skull that I picked up somewhere; I think it may have been a souvenir from Disneyland. The skull is wrapped in this thin net-like material that's kind of torn away at parts. A steel ball kept the skull in place in the water, all I needed then was to add light.
Lighting is:
1. a strobe off on the upper-right, flagged so it only caught the top parts of the fog.
2. a strobe above and to the left, gelled blue with a spot grid, as fill.
3. a little tiny projector suspended directly above, shining a crown-like pattern onto the skull.
4. glowstick blood, dribbled into the eye sockets. I accidentally got a drop on his cheek, and since there's no known way to clean glowstick blood up, I added a bit around his teeth as well to make the mistake look intentional.
Long day shoot. I started welding the frame around 4:30p and finished up the shoot sometime close to midnight.
