Critique by Natasha for the Critique Club

Composition- Content
The overall impact of this picture is great, the expression is strong and it captures the emotion of the subject very well, tells a great story. The person standing on the left of the picture could have been cropped out, but to be honest I didnt notice him at first, just thought it was the darkness of the corner. Eyes are totally drawn to the woman, so the guy standing there doesnt spoil the picture, it would just be better without him there.
Camera Work-Technical
Focus is sharp. The lighting is quite harsh on the right of the picture, but the exposure and lighting on the womans face is perfect. The washed out top right corner almost adds to the blueness of the shawl, but maybe you could try a bit of spot editing to cool it down a bit ( I know its not DPC legal, but this picture would be great framed or used for other competitions where editing is legal)
My Opinion
Its a great capture and the story it tells and emotion of it are beautiful. I think its one of the hardest things to do, capture pure emotion, just did it perfectly! With just a bit more cropping this would be even better. Congrats on 7th place! I hope that you find this helpful!

beautiful shot.. Initially I react to her face, then her hands. She is subtley expressive. The contrasts between the colors of her shawl and the wall make her stand right out, yet gives her placement in her surroundings. I feel sorry for her. She deserves better.
The top right corner is a bit washed out, but not to the detriment of the photo as a whole.

She has a beautiful air to her. The thirds usage is great. The only issue I see is the overblown/over exposed white to the top right. No major big deal. Great photo that caught my eye this week !!!! Shiiizzzam

A beautiful shot with good composition, the person standing to her right distracts me a tiny bit, but since the angle of the pants is in parallel with her arm, the distraction is minimal. lhall

Very nice. A little bit of a hot spot to the right, however, still a great emotional piece. Nothing distracting in the background, and the subject is great. Focus and clarity are also good. Nice shot. Good luck in the challenge. ~Hbunch7187~

For my this he is the best one of the week. The expression of the lady is real and shows the hardness of situations like this. I like the saturation of color and the composition although she had tried to avoid the gray zone of the left. 9

Well done emotive pic. The colors are vivid, the framing is good. The background above her head though is really washed out. Still a good pic though. - Inspzil

challenge -- met. and the photo tells a story, which is always an added bonus.
technical -- good catch of her mostly in the shade ... it looks like the light was pretty harsh out there. nice focus and clarity.
composition -- also nice. i wish she was looking more into the camera but that was probably out of your control. what's that in the upper left corner? cropping that out (640x427 format) would maybe have helped.

WOW great shot. Good eye, good find. Wishing the left was cropped a bit more. The right is a little over exposed......the sun!! I can live with that. That's all I'd change..neat shot. Justine.

What can I say... beautiful composition, cropping, focus. I like how the wall color contrasts with the clothing, not to mention her dark skin. 9 kosmik

Great emotion! The color and focus are great!!! If I had any kind of complaint, it would be the pants along the left side. (why included) The colorful confetti is a great touch, good thing to include it. Sorry, I was going to go for a 10, but the pants keep bugging me. Strong, strong 9! Swash

The wall behind her is very washed out... Good subject though, wish you would have shot from a differnet angle and gotten more of her face, and maybe filled the frame with the blue shawl. Good luck.
