Perseid back in 2008. Focused past infinity, I believe... then tried to save it in Photoshop.

One question: Why did Photoshop save my camera data (shutter, aperture, focal length, etc.) even though I added a border?

Just a little condensation on the lens can cause the soft focus too. It's happened to me at times. There is almost always a street light or tower light within view near the horizon here in S Florida. I find that and focus on it.
Another option is to focus as well as I can by eyeballing the brightest star, then shoot one and look at it zoomed in the LCD.
That was fortunate timing to "catch a falling star" !

Nice shot even when soft.

Regarding the saved details, it does that automatically unless you tell it not to. The most common way to strip the EXIF data is to do a save-for-web, because that excises the data. But it can be done from menu also.
