Photographer’s Notes
Procrastinating again … I’ve managed to wait until the last available weekend in the month to shoot for the free study. I’ve been wanting to go to the Olympic Sculpture Park in Seattle so that’s where I’m headed. And while I’m interested in the sculpture, I don’t want to just shoot the sculpture. I want to place it in context.

I’ve not only waited until the last weekend, I’ve waited until Sunday and I am up before dawn. As I head out the door, my artist wife mumbles – “don’t forget the background.” I so envy her intent to sleep a few more hours warm in the bed.

The sculpture park is not in the best neighborhood in Seattle. I’ve taken off my good watch, strapped on a cheap sport watch, emptied my wallet of everything but a driver’s license and enough money to grab a Starbucks along the way. I expect I’ll see panhandlers and be asked to participate … but no. The park is absolutely deserted. The sun has just bested the horizon. It’s crisp and cool and clear - like about 1-2% of our Seattle mornings. It may reach 70 today.

Afterwards, I wander down the waterfront shooting this and that. I tailgate a boater into the downtown marina and shoot Seattle from the water w/ and w/o boats. But in the end, I’m drawn back to the photos from the park. They make Seattle feel clean, inviting, livable … which it is … and at least for today, rain free!

I like the star bursted sun. Gives the photo just an extra bit of life. Nice use of a wide angle lens to add even more size to the structure.
