Ever passed by a place so often it became familiar, even though you had never spent any real time looking at it? This ship is such a place for me. Located on the north side of the QEW in Jordan Station Onatrio, this landmark was a place that I had passed by countless times. I completed my teacher's college studies in Amherst NY, so the weekly drive from Mississauga took me past this sentinel on a regular basis. It has become fixture in the Jordan Station harbour after it was moved there from Montreal in the late 90's. Originally, this ship was a Lawrence River ferry called Le Progress (see my Long Exposure shot below) built in 1914.

The ship was brought to Jordan Station in 1997 after being converted to a restaurant. But because of big dreams, and small wallets, the project never took off. In 2003, arsonists got a handle on the ship, and burnt most of it. Since then, the ship has been rusting away, and will eventually need removal. Here is a photo of the ship before the arson:
Jordan Station 'Pirate Ship' circa 1998

While its history in the Jordan Station harbour will ultimately be short lived, Im sure it will last in the memories of QEW commuters for a lifetime.

Very cool perspective, and the story definitely adds something here. I was also interested to see the photo of the ship pre-arson. Sure does look pretty different with all its deck structures missing.

Kinda sorta thought this might have been from someone I knew. You know what? Even if you'd PM'ed me and BEGGED me to go, I wouldn't have gone for less than $1000 and large double-double. So there.

;-)

Nice shot, Brad.

Wonderful use of the fisheye! Such a moody and sad photo, and your story explains why. Very nicely realized.

mmm-hmmm. I've never been able to get such a nice shot of this ship, and believe me, I've tried. Well done.

If this were possible with non fish-eye/distortion, I would have liked this more. As it stands, I still like the overall mood to the photo.
