I have to pretend that I work sometimes...

Taken with one light source (fluorescent bulb) on right side. Most likely not the most creative portrait out there. I just wanted to focus on the basics.

Following considerations:
- Have focus on eyes and pen hand with short DOF.
- Make sure both eyes are lit.
- Make it seem like I'm interested in what I'm doing.
- Make sure I look like I am writing.

Post-processing:
- A bit of sharpening
- Some color and level adjustments

as a self portrait this really has a great deal of reality to it

I like the depth or layers in this image.

I like the lighting, the focus, the colors, and the foreground. I find the subject's right shoulder and hand distracting. I think this might look better with some of the left side of the shot cropped out. This would also move the face a bit to the left and into a "rule of thirds" location in the frame.

Strong portrait - great composition, excellent use of DOF, good pose and lighting. Only criticism, really, is the brightness of some of the highlights, namely on the hand, and to a certain extent on your face and shirt, too. If you were shooting in RAW, you could have output a darker JPG/TIFF and done a faux HDR to tone down the bright spots. In any case, strong image, and good luck in the final standings.

That's cool. I prefer the "environmental" portraits, or the ones that tell us a bit about who the individual is, or what he or she does. This is nice. The light's done well and evokes an atmosphere suitable for the activity, the focus is perfect for the scene. You're a lefty, so an added point. :-P 8
