|I've been taking photos of activities for the YMCA where my wife works. Opening day of the pool provided a lot of good potential for family shots. This one especially appealed to me.
It will probably be assumed this is a young mother and baby, I also thought so when I took the shot. My wife informs me the older girl is actually an aunt to the baby. They were having an awful lot of fun and it was clear that these two adore each other. Reminds me of my own daughter with her niece and nephews. Maybe that's why I like this.
My initial version was a good color shot, but it still seemed to be lacking something. I played with some monochrome treatments the evening of rollover and I think I nailed the right look with this version.
-Cropped too tight on left. (That was the edge of the frame, so I am kind of stuck with it, and none of my other shots captured the moment quite the same way.)
-Would like baby's face to be more visible
Wow, this had me on the edge of my seat all week! I had been hopeful for a high 5 out of it, so a mid 6 and HM is way beyond expectations. I think the monochrome treatment I chose is a large part of the final appeal for this one. My original edit was good, but I don't think it was anything more than a mid-pack entry:
It still seemed like something was missing, so I played around with it in Silver Efex the last evening before rollover. The toning and vignette seemed to do the trick.
Thanks for all the great comments and for the weekly beating-up in other challenges that has helped me get my photography to this point.
