The setup took quite a bit of time.
The stem is actually made out of flexible aluminium wires (5 nos knotted together). A green ribbon was wound over the entire length.
The leaves are real for sure, and attached to stem using transparent cello-tape.
The sepals are also cut outs from a brown ribbon. Balloon is attached again using cello-tape.

Background is a black chart paper (very thin). My bad that the local store here do not have any thicker ones. So I really couldn't help the textures created by virtue of folding of the paper.

The plastic glass is filled with actual stones. Lighting is from bottom at the gap between backdrop and the subject.

I really have no clue how this will be scoring, but it definitely was fun shooting, although my wife is little angry.

Greetings from the Critique Club

I'm glad you enjoyed shooting this one. That is at least half the battle in my opinion.

I think your overall idea was pretty creative, but somehow it missed the mark. As one of your commenters noticed, the lighting is a bit harsh, particularly on your main subject, the balloon. The background I personally was not too fond of. A plain coloured background would have served you better, either white or black (just my opinion remember). The watercolour effect is the thing I notice first about this image and really the background should be secondary to the subject matter (in this specific challenge).

Using borders is also risky on DPC. There are a lot of people who hate them and that can have a negative impact on the score. I personally like a border if I feel it somehow enhances the image and use them quite often myself. In this case however, I think the border was a bit heavy and is not really necessary. I think it gives the feeling that the image has been boxed up somehow. In addition, the balloon is framed a little bit too tightly to the left. I would like to see just a little bit more space to the top and left of the balloon.

I think overall you did a good job at attempting something a little bit different. A few things in your set up (including using a plain coloured balloon rather than a multi coloured one) could have pushed your score up over the 5.

Feel free to contact me if you want me to explain anything further.

Sarah.

This is a very creative shot! I love the background because it looks like a watercolor painting. The lighting on the balloon is just a bit harsh, could have been a bit softer. This challenge was hard to come up with creative ideas. You and I took a different approach and didn't fair too well. Good luck in the future!
