I would like to thank JBSmithana for his forum on bird/nature photography which was my impetus to go out and try shooting birds.

I was thrilled to be sitting in my car photographing two Great Blue Herons, waiting for them to do something besides stand there - when out of the corner of my eye I see this third beauty coming in at full throttle to take claim to the area. I was so excited I wasn't sure my shots would be anything but blur. I couldn't believe my eyes when I got home and actually had something worth bragging about. I hope others love this as much as I do - but if not that's ok too - I was there and can still enjoy the thrill of it all. I don't consider myself knowledgeable or even that talented - just lucky to be in the right place at the right time and it makes me want to go out and take more!!!

Did you get any of the 'underappreciated' awards for this one, Patches? If you didn't, you should have. I have no idea why you didn't score higher for this image in the hotly contested Free Study category.

This is VERY hard to do and I congratulate you on first seeing what was about to happen and then capturing it so well. Did you go to the Montezuma Swamps for this one? They have a nice auto trail there. In any event, you have this one fair and square. Sharp and nicely presented in the frame.
