Taken in late afternoon when the trees were partly in shade. Biggest thing I see with the fill flash is the extra detail in the eye. Since the bird was half in the sun the highlights blew out with the flash but still, interesting detail where I might not otherwise have gotten it.

Flash at -2 with a diffuser on it.

Glad you are out there trying flash Mary. It is tough on harsh sunny days but flash still helps reduce the contrast between the light and dark areas. If I was getting very dark and very light areas causing too much contrast on the bird I'd likley shoot this the same way you did with flash but also with an expsoure comp of -.3 or -.5. Somethimes you just have to play around.
