 A pair of cardinals in my back yard this afternoon.
Nikkor AF 180mm f2.8, aperture pri, manual focus, monopod, on cam flash. Shot from about 25 ft, cropped to about 1/3 frame.

25 feet is likely at the limit for an onboard flash but I'm sure if you did a test with and without the flash you would still see some difference. Like you said it probably brought out a bit more color in the bird.
