Is the pink collar supposed to fool me into thinking this is a friendly people-lover?

great looking dog! I think however that you were too close to the dog for this shot as all the light from the flash is right there where the collar is. And if this is the way you wanted the photo to apprear....where the muzzle and the "night sky" blend in together, then perhaps something to diffuse the flash.
