I think the hard light is fine. The young man has a bit of action look to him(his hands and expression). so no real need to soften it up. Regarding separation of subject from background--you are exactly right...it could use a second light either on the BG or as a rim/hair light on the subject. You can also use a large piece of white foamcore on the side of the subject opposite the flash to soften up or fill in the shadow areas. A nice light reflector for about 3.00. Thanks for contributing.
