Challenge: Free Study 2010-02 (Advanced Editing VII)
Camera: Canon EOS-20D
Lens: Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM
Location: Honolulu, HI
Date: Feb 4, 2010
Aperture: f/1.8
ISO: 200
Shutter: 1/25
Date Uploaded: Feb 23, 2010

Lighting: background light is the reflection of a lamp bouncing off a cream colored dinner plate. Orchids are sitting on my coffee table.

Color correction to get white balance better (less yellow than original). In RAW: Clarity +100, light and shadows emphasized by shifting curve to a greater sloping curve. Yellow desaturated; Red luminance increased. Converted to CS3 and sharpened using high pass technique and layer mass for selected sharpening. Then used USM to selectively sharpen a couple of small spots. Cloned some of the background light to make it even and to sharpen the edge of a couple of blossoms. Resized. Border added.

Greetings from the Critique Club

First Impressions:

Beautiful artistic shot of a flower.

Technical (Comp, lighting, color, focus, Processing):

I love how you arranged the subject in this shot and bouncing the light off a plate for the background added a really nice feel to this. The only problem with the light is that it’s a bit skewed. It would be nice to see the swirl of light more uniformly and it seems a bit off on the upper left.

In my opinion the color on this shot is beautiful. I love the contrasting colors and they are very pleasing to my eyes.

Focus is nice and sharp on the center but the parts that are blurred have an almost distracting halo around some of them. Your processing all seems well done but I wonder if the halos around the blurred leaves were caused through some of the processing?

Challenge:

Being a free study, yeah I think this met the challenge 

Artistic/Emotion:

The colors of this on the soft background really give me a nice artistic feel to the shot.

Summary:

Ah the joys of a free study. This shot actually received a 9 from me in voting and I am a bit surprised at where it finished but the FS is notorious. I definitely think this should have scored at least a solid 6 but I think you were knocked down a little from the focus and halos. That and there are many voters that just tend to vote flowers lower because they are flowers. In the end a few, small technical issues hindered you as well as the shot not being captivating enough to really draw the voter in, this is especially important in a FS with 300+ entries.
