I have a preset that I made in LR that does these kind of conversions by desaturating the hell out of things, boosting the contrast and playing with the luminance sliders of various colours.
The snow in front is snow on top of the frozen Yellowstone River, where the ice is thick enough to walk upon.
This was taken with a polarizer on a 17-40 L at 40mm
