Challenge: Things that Count (Basic Editing)
Collection: Portfolio
Camera: Olympus E-510
Lens: Olympus 40-150mm f/3.5-4.5 Zuiko Digital
Location: Colorado
Date: Feb 9, 2010
Aperture: f4

Shutter: 1.3 seconds

Converted from RAW. I struggled with the getting the lighting right, still not sure it's right. Decided to go with a slower shutter speed and ambient light because I didn't like the glare that my flash was giving. I did a lot of experimenting with different apertures and DOF. May not be a great picture but I learned quite a bit while doing it, and at this point that is the most important thing for me.

Greetings from the Critique Club.

First impressions are that the picture in the background is a little too prominent.

Technically this is ok. Composition is good although the camera does feel a tad cramped in the frame. It also feels like it is on a lean. There is good separation of the subject from the background but I feel the dark of the mans jacket in the picture is quite an attention grabber. The low contrast is good as it seems to add to the "old time" feel.

Artistically This is again ok but it lacks any "wow". It is a good study of the camera and the picture in the background adds both context and interest to the overall scene.

In summary this is a nice shot and it scored what nice shots do - around a 6.

Feel free to PM me if you have any queries.

My immediate reaction was "I want one!", but that's another story.

I like the way you've composed this, and I think the lower contrast suits the subject. My only minor problem is with the slightly darker area in the bottom left corner.
