 Honestly, I'm proud that I achieved how I envisioned this image though I'm having second thoughts about the smoothness

I first made a new layer over it with overlay mode and 50% thing checked.

I then used a white brush to highlight parts of him that were in shadows.

I desaturated the image and then burnt the sword.

I increased the levels so the image became pretty bright. I then burnt his hair and other darker parts that should be dark.

I then cloned out the rest of the background in a moment of foolishness when I could have selected him out of the image. It was painstaking.

I played with the curves to improve the relationship between the higlighted and darkened parts.

I then used the action gothic glow over this to create a glow over the image.

The action messed up the balance and light and dark a little so I burned out bits I thought didn't need to be dark and vice versa.

I used topaz adjust to take away the noise and topaz detail to bring the slightest bit of detail.

I sharpened image at 1600 and then resized to 800
