 a going away present for my best friend jon right before he left to move to arizona. he wanted to be able to look back at this point in his life at a later time

In this and "jonny", I have a problem with the framing. It's off here, and in the other, there's too much at top. I don't think this was a style issue and it feels too much like rushed framing. The same is true, though less, in your "pillowhead" photos. They work better because of the very interesting wall and the good gradient light on them, but they still feel too airy or framed without care. I think you understand light theory pretty well (edge light and everything in this photo is really good), but I think you need to pay attention to framing your scene, or at least convince the viewer that your choice is meaningful.
