Challenge: Still Life With Fruit (Advanced Editing VII)
Collection: 2010 challenges
Camera: Canon EOS-40D
Lens: Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro
Location: my dining room
Date: Jan 24, 2010
Aperture: 5.6
ISO: 1600
Shutter: 1/100

I was trying to go for the dutch masters type of still life. The warmth, the textures. My problem is that I can't arrange a group of things worth anything. I starting off just with a single fruit , and perhaps I should have gone with that shot.

The lighting is natural lighting from a large front window and a small side window. I did a high radius unsharp mask, and increased the contrast with curves

My biggest worry it the piece of fruit out front -- the focus is soft on that one. It doesn't bother me, but I'm afraid that I'll get hit hard for that. I tried sharpening that peach a tad with a topaz photo pop and then faded the topazing to about 36%

I don't know -- I've stared at it so long, the world is looking a bit fuzzy! I'll cross my fingers and hope, maybe that will work :D

Congratulations on a beautiful image! I struggle with still lifes, and really loved this one during voting.

Oh, nice job, Wendy! You are quite the still life photographer, aren't you? :)

Hi Wendy, greetings from our Critique Club! :)

First of all, I think you did a great job with the processing, it's the thing that I notice more than anything.

Lighting
It's just perfect the way the inside of the bowl slips gently into shadow, so very smoothly. Also, the left side is dark, to add to the dynamic of the scene. Also, the ISO 1600 might have been too much, you could probably use a tripod, bump that aperture to f/13ish with a lower shutter speed.

Composition
A little more space at the bottom would helped the shot, as with the focus on the front element. It could use just a little more clarity.
Pros - the way the peaches fall from the bowl is very smooth and clean, it's really a perfect composition.
Also the seamless background is so wonderfully textured, and it fades out very nicely.

Processing
You were able to succeed in recreating the look you wanted. The photo looks like a painting and has very rich earthy tones. It has a lot of grain, but it just adds to the overall look.

Still, it was a 6+ score, and it's a very good picture.

If you have any questions feel free to contact me.

Regards,
Joao

I like the simplicity of this. The background color is a wonderful complement to the peach color and texture.

Very nice overall. Good job of putting everything together compositionally. Only minor nit is that I wish the very front peach was within the focal range also. Good luck.

Beautiful, I like the way you cropped the basket at the top.

Nicely done. I think: I would like to see one more object in the shot on the right. ??Perhaps not let the peaches stand on their own.?? It is a nice nice shot with very good lighting and color. 7

great composition, but it could really use more negative space to help frame the peaches better. Nice lighting, however and lovely background choice.

A teeny sharper focus would've put this to another level. As is, I do like the composition, tones & your choice of subject matter and background. Good luck!

Front peach is a tad bit out of focus, just a bit more DOF would have helped. I like the soft lighting.
