I should have added that at the first (h flip)and last (45 deg. rotate) steps I used the "darken" blending mode instead of "lighten." Using lighten repeatedly seems to push the image in too light a direction but sometimes mixing darken and lighten, with a final levels adjustment layer on top, gets a wider tonal range.
