I do not know if this was my best photo of 2009, but it is one that I have yet to use in a challenge.

Koeėlbaai (Kogel Bay), Western Cape, South Africa.

Approximate coordinates:
34°13'42.77"S, 18°50'32.58"E

Taken at the 18mm end of the lens after the sun has set while standing on a rock with a slightly broken tripod. This image was taken so long ago that I am not sure of the details anymore, but I most likely used a 3-stop graduated netural density filter to hold back exposure in the sky and I might also have used a 2-stop neutral density filter to increase the exposure time.

Lightroom RAW conversion. Noise reduction. Cloned out a few imperfections. Brightened the left side of the image with a masked curves adjustment layer. Brightened the rocks with a masked curves adjustment layer. Increased contrast. Adjusted levels. Resize, sharpen and save for web.

GREETINGS FROM THE CRITIQUE CLUB

A stunning image and one that did exceptionally well in the Best of 2009 Challenge. Congratulations on your 6.78 score. In any 'normal' contest it would have been a contender for a bright little virtual ribbon. In this one? Well a top 20 isn't bad.

While you did request a Critique Club comment, there is simply nothing to critique here, so with thanks for the chance to review this very fine image again, I will move on to the next image in the queue.

I was on the United States Pacific coast this year, and I prayed for a calm day like this to get a photo -- even if it was in the bottom stratosphere -- like this. But with the typical, every-day wind and fog and drizzle you see on the coast, I realized just how special it is to see scenes like this in perfection. I'm in awe! Congratulations on just such stunning photography!

Fantastic. I got it wrong with who the photographer was though. Konrad Blum and Pperold both have shots taken around here in their portfolio in the same kind of style.

Superlative! This shot could be by Philip Perold as he has entered images taken here before such as "Chocolate Chip" and "The Blanket" but I notice another entry in this challenge called "The Rainbow Fence" which I know is another favorite place of Philip's. Obviously Philip could not have entered both images so which one of the 2 is by Philip?
Aha...I think I worked it out....this one is yours Philip as you have taken quite a number of shots at this spot and this has your trademark touch to it. The "Rainbow Fence" shot was taken by Konrad Blum.
I gave this a 9

great contrast between the jagged rocks and the soft surf.

This is very pretty too - I love the detail in the rocks but so surreal!

This is nice, but as it has become a bit of a common shot here, something along these lines has to be completely outstanding in some fashion to impress me, and I'm afraid this one doesn't have anything in particular that makes me stop and go wow.

I recognize it's a good shot, but unfortunately it's a type of shot that we see so much of now that it almost becomes mundane.

Not many people I know photograph this place quiet as the person I presume who took this. Always special and beautifull. Blue velvet comes to mind looking at the waters here. Very nice

What a surreal seascape, mad all the more so by the long exposure. Beautifully captured.
You have done a great job on post on this... just the right amount of sharpness. There is a hint of posterization in the sky, which is ever so hard to avoid in a very smoothly graduated blue sky.It is just barely apparent in the final image (it appears mostly in the red channel, less in the green, and just visible in the blue)

I'm not going to tell you what those little "rock floating around" remind me of...I think you did another of this and called it Chocolate Chips....ya...that's not what I'm thinking...but I will say you have excellent lighting, beautiful long exposure...well done

The details of the cracks and crevices of the rocks in the foreground is great - one can see and almost feel the wet surface those rocks on the beach. Colors of the twilight sky is gorgeous. The mountain range in the distance just completes this beautiful beach scene. Nicely captured - 8
