I had 2 attached and 2 unattached wings, so played around with composition and depth of field. The hardest part was keeping the black background butterfly 'dust' free! In another composition I had the dark spots appearing as eyes, but it looked too KKK for my liking. Taken on the kitchen table on black card, with indirect sunlight illuminating, and I used my hand off to the side to change the shadows. Canon 30D, Sigma 50mm macro, on tripod, mirror lock up, cable release, ISO 100, f5 at 1/10sec.

Even in Death the gossamer of this fallen butterfly's wings are fragile and beautiful. The little rectangular chip out of the top wing and its shredded jags is just sorrowful but it serves well to encapsulate the challenge note of delicacy.

Take.... these broken wings.... and learn to fly again!! (OK I'm showing my age a little I guess). Nice depth of field and the black bg really gives the subject isolation that guarantees good results on DPC. 7
