GREETINGS FROM THE CRITIQUE CLUB
Welcome to the Challenges of DPC. For your first entry, you have certainly done exceptionally well. A super score for a super shot.
Seattle never looked any better. Nice crisp image and carefully done HDR.
Because you did such a good job there is little for this member of the Critique Club to critique! If I was picking 'nits' I suppose I might suggest that the bright red area to the right in the image makes a viewer return there again and again instead of really enjoying all the rest of the beauty you have captured. But that's surely one little 'nit' for sure and a subjective one at that.
I look forward to seeing more of your images in competition now that you've gotten your feet wet.

| I love the juxtaposition of manmade beauty on the Space Needle on the left and the natural beauty of the mountain volcano Mt. Rainier on the right. Two different beauties shown in this landscape shot. I also love how the ufo-like clouds also mimic the ufo shape of the top portion of the needle. Great eye to spot and compose the elements like so in this shot. I just have one plaint - the details/edges in the buildings seems just a touch soft/unfocused. The original size is probably razor sharp in which case I think the root cause is resizing and sharpening the photo down in one stop. I learned this tip early on at DPC - with large original sizes, resizing and sharpening the photo down in two or three steps (i.e. 4800x3000 to 2400x1500 sharpen and then resize again down to 960x600 and sharpen) will help preserve the same sharpness and detail that the original shows at full size. If that is not the root cause then a touch of USM (unsharp mask) could do wonders in reclaiming sharpness. Overall, this is a great cityscape/nature shot. |

This is a really nice skyline shot, but the second I look at it I instantly feel it's a touch soft. It's not overly so much that it ruins the shot and I imagine it would look great on print.
One of the nice features of this shot is the contrast of the two worlds. You have the brightly lit city with the tower dominating, then behind it all you have the mountain with a gorgeous sky, which is sort of saying "build big cities all you like, but nature is still more powerful and more beautiful". That's what I take from it anyway :) |
