One step backwards and you wouldn't have cut of the paws.
Additionally, why didn't you take a lower position? This is one of the basic rules in pet-photography: always bend through your knees - even lay down on your tummy - to get at the same hight - eye hight - of the animal you're photographing.
This is a nice snapshot for the birthday album of your dog.
