This is Elmer, who was nice enough to let me traipse about on his property taking photos. I got my rural decay entry from this session.

Agreed, but that's what you get with a spur of the moment candid. Too bad this was a few weeks too early for the candid challenge. It would certainly do way better than my actual entry.

Now that's character! What a treasure.

First impression:
I like the use of topaz with this busy picture. It works well with all the clutter to bring out the individual elements

Great portrait, tells a story and makes you feel like you know Elmer. Great colours.

first impression suggested HDR (I see it's Topaz now), which I thought was a bit 'rad' being a new technique on an old-time subject. Nothing wrong with that, of course. I agree with the others about it being a great environmental portrait. (But have you tried it in mono with a sepia tint?)

you have a great balance of post processing here. I don't like the ones that are over-done and you have hit the mark well here IMHO. I love this photo.

Great environmental portrait. Love the dog (even though it is quite untraditional), gives it an unposed look.

Good eye. I did use a modest amount of Topaz and Clarify, but I didn't want to take it over the top, just enough to give it some dimension.

nice capture of someone in their natural environment - and he looks very happy there :- )

Although the dog is at an unusual angle for a 'portrait' on the other hand it gives a nice visual line leading us straight to Elmer.

Good result.

There is loads to look at around your subject too which offers some added interest.

wonderfully exciting photo. I love all his tools just strewn about him. Like a true farmer. thats how alot of places look around here. Love the lighting and his expression. Truly classic shot. Great job.
