 Zosterops japonicus is the white-eye native to Japan, and known as mejiro. I noticed a pair of them coming to this tree to take the berries, along with a pair of bigger birds, during one of my lessons. So afterwards, I went out onto the balcony with my camera and was lucky that the pair had come back to the tree.

A big crop and lots of sharpening. There was one shot of him with a berry in his beak, but there were too many twigs in the way.

There are often pictures of these birds in photo competitions in Japan, and they have long been a subject in Japanese art.

We get the exact same bird in Cape Town, South Africa and it is also called a white eye. They eat aphids on our lemon trees. Nice one here!

What a cool-looking bird! The red berries and white branches are a nice setting for him. That white eyering just grabs my eye and pulls me into the image.
