We went to my wife's cousin's koto recital at the old Imperial Summer Residence in Nikko. He's pretty darn good, having played it since he was a first grader in elementary school. (That's him and my sister-in-law.)
This is a 13 string ordinary koto, but he also played the 17 string bass koto (with thick yellow strings).
Some of the pieces were quite modern - in one of his solos he actually used a kitchen ladle against the strings. In a medley he played with three others, it actually sounded a bit like Spanish guitar.
Their encore piece was a traditional tune that I happened to learn on the koto last month when I was at my small school and went to the 7th graders' culture/music class

Wonderful use of dof and contrast to make your subject stand out. Great story. Thanks!

I have never seen one of them, I read your story and still needed to google it. Interesting piece! I like the photo as well.
