 It was like a ritual. Every morning about five-ish, the door would creak and then he would step out with his big coffee thermos. It would always bring a smile to Walter's face as he watched him sort of stumble across the yard. But he would always have it together by the time he hit the stairs.

Usually there was a quick pat on the hood, sometimes a pause to buff a dirty spot on the paint. Then Walter would give his usual care to make sure his companion safely made the short trip down the steep rocky road into town. First stop was always the filling station, but rarely for gas, it was a short trip after all. It was for the thermos, it always had to filled completely before continuing on to the hardware store.

Evenings were about as ritual-like as the mornings. When the store was finally closed for the evening, they would head off to the diner. Less than hour later, they would be heading back up the steep rocky road. Almost always the ascent was made in the dark.

Close to fifty years this routine had gone on, but this morning was different and Walter was worried. It was well past nine and his companion was nowhere to be seen...
