Decided to finally try out my new 580 flash and Lumiquest
Big Bounce. Of course, my dog Midnite served as the perfect model. He's a 2-year old Flat Coat Retriever/Border Collie mix and has the sweetest personality! This was my first experience working with a proper flash and I really like how it turned out.

I liked this one as well, but my eye went to his nose first.

This is fantastic - I can just feel how soft that fur is - and the eyes are so penetrating - congrats on a photo that should be on the front page!! A 10 in my book.
This is just about the hardest photo I can imagine taking. The black fur is fundamentally hard to bring out detail in without blowing out the rest. Super job with this. You've managed to convey something of the dog's personality (do dogs have personality?) Great work.
The lighting is a bit harsh. It looks like there's a flash on the camera fired straight at him/her. Getting it to one of the sides helps alot, if that's not possible you could try and hold a white paper a few inches in front of the flashhead to spread the light a bit more. Photographing pets is very tricky, but you have taken a good photo of your dog anyway.
