Challenge: Your Corner of the World III (Basic Editing)
Camera: Olympus E-500 EVOLT
Lens: Olympus 40-150mm f/3.5-4.5 Zuiko Digital
Location: Exmoor, Somerset
Date: Oct 19, 2009
Aperture: f4.5
ISO: 250
Shutter: 1/400
Galleries: Animals, Rural
Date Uploaded: Oct 20, 2009

Each autumn on Exmoor the pony herds are rounded up in order for the foals to be counted and inspected. I actually work for a charity, The Moorland Mousie Trust that takes in unwanted foals following the round up each year so it seemed appropriate to use this image as representative of my part of the world.

I'm going to be very interested to see how this scores. The shots were taken with my Olympus E500 and 40-150mm lens. As the light wasn't brilliant, I was reluctant to use too fast a shutter speed, so opted for 1/400 but shot using 250 ISO. This has made my shots quite grainy and looking at this on another computer, other than my laptop, it really doesn't look particularly good at all.

Shot is cropped (there is an outrider with the herd), used shadow/highlight, levels and minor changes in saturation/contrast.

Good DoF

I think I would have went with a landscape crop and a slight CCW rotation. I'm sure the road really does slant that way, but I think the photo would look better if you were to level it out.

Wow. I think this would have looked SO much better in B&W, in fact, I would love to see it in B&W. It would add so much strength to the shot.

What an amazing opportunity - I'll be interested to hear the story behind it.
