The effect was created with a slow shutter speed and zooming the lens during the exposure. This was taken at the beach, the "peak" is a rock. The dark area below the peak is sand visible through the water.

I have to tell you, the first time I read the title, just after looking at your image, I read "Dark Peaked Clam". My reading skills are poor. But it does kind of look like an abstracty clam - maybe? Or maybe I should just go get some sleep :P

Creative blur tends to not fare well for mass appeal. Got an 8 from me, however. Congrats on the Posthumous ribbon!

Interesting title - I think 'catastrophe' rather than 'calamity' might have suited your brooding image a little better.

I actually think a portrait orientation with plenty of negative space above would have worked really well with this.

Overall, I like the image quite a lot but I think it struggles a little as a movie poster.
