I believe this is a juvenile black rat snake, but if anyone knows snakes well I could be swayed. Thanks to Jess for spotting this guy on our walk, he was really tiny, less than a foot long and curled up like that he was only a few inches across. I had the 400mm on (as always) but I got one of my first good chances to use my kenko extension tubes. I was pretty happy about it and how they worked. I only wish that I had a little more light to work with and that he was more cooperative. He had his face tucked behind the leaf and I didn't want to disturb him. Nothing exciting composition-wise here, just showing the snake I saw today :-)

Aw, he's shy!

Extension tube worked great here; nice sharpness and DOF.

Can't help you with snake ID though my husband told me once that if you pick up a non-poisonous snake it will pee. If it doesn't pee, best to call and check the local availability of antivenom ;-)
