Merle Graffam discovered the remains of the first Therizinosarus ever found outside Asia at this exact spot.

Merle's discovery was a new species formally named after him and called: Nothronychus graffami

In his hands he is holding casts of two special bones.

Bone #1:
The large one is a claw from it's front legs. It walked upright, like Tyrannosaurus, but was actually a plant eater.

Bone#2:
The "mystery" bone. The small one in Merle's left hand is a knuckle bone and the very first bone Merle found.

Marine animals, like Plesiosaurs, don't have knuckles. This bone proved that Merle's dinosaur was a land animal, not a marine dinosaur. That small bone led to speculation as to why a land animal was found so far out to sea and a lot of research to determine what species dinosaur it was.
